How to Choose Books at the Right Level

The five-finger check, when to pick a harder book anyway, and why the book you read aloud should be tougher than the one they read.
The five-finger check
Have your child read one page aloud. Put up a finger for every word they cannot read. Zero or one finger means the book is comfortable practice. Two or three fingers is a stretch that works with your help. Four or five means save it for a read-aloud.
Two book stacks, two jobs
- The practice stack: books your child reads themselves, at about 95% accuracy. This builds fluency.
- The read-aloud stack: books above their reading level that you read to them. This builds vocabulary and background knowledge.
When interest beats level
A motivated reader will push through a harder book about a subject they love. Let that happen โ just keep an easier book in rotation so daily practice stays smooth.
Try this tonight
- Practice books should feel almost easy.
- Read aloud above your child's own level.
- Interest can outrank level for a while.
