Signs Your Reader May Need More Support

July 8, 2026 · 3 min read

Patterns worth watching for at home, and what to do next if several of them sound familiar.

Patterns to watch

  • Guessing words from the first letter or the picture instead of reading through them.
  • Reading the same word correctly on one line and missing it on the next.
  • Word-by-word reading with no phrasing after second grade.
  • Accurate reading with little memory of what was just read.
  • Strong avoidance — headaches, stalling, or tears at reading time.

What to do next

One of these on a tired evening is normal. Several of them, showing up week after week, are worth acting on. Start by keeping a short log of what you notice for two weeks — dates, the text, and what happened.

Bring that log to your child's teacher and ask what screening data the school already has. If you would like help reading the picture, our team can walk through it with you.

Try this tonight

  • Look for patterns across weeks, not single bad nights.
  • Write down what you notice, with dates.
  • Ask the school what screening data exists.
