Fluent readers free up attention for meaning. Repeated reading of short, familiar passages is the single most effective at-home routine for building rate, accuracy, and expression.

Repeated Reading (3x)

10 min

Choose a 100–150 word passage your child reads at about 95% accuracy.
Read it aloud together once, then have your child read it twice more.
Time the final read and chart the words-per-minute.

Echo Reading

Read one sentence aloud with strong phrasing and expression.
Your child echoes the same sentence, matching your phrasing.
Alternate through a page, then read the page together.

Partner Reading

Take turns reading alternate paragraphs.
The listener follows along and gently supplies a word after 3 seconds.
Swap roles on the second pass through the page.

Reader's Theater Night

Assign character parts from a short script or dialogue-rich page.
Rehearse twice, focusing on voice and punctuation.
Perform for a family member or record it to play back.

When to Ask for Help

Word-by-word reading with no phrasing after second grade.
Ignoring punctuation or losing place on the line.
Strong accuracy but a rate far below grade benchmarks.
