READING AT HOME TOOLKIT
Simple routines, book ideas, and conversation starters to help your family build confident, joyful readers.
Daily Reading Routines
Morning
Read a short poem, joke, or fun fact aloud at breakfast to start the day with language.
After School
Set a 15–20 minute ‘quiet reading’ window where everyone in the family reads their own book.
Dinner
Ask each person to share one new word they heard or read today and what it means.
Bedtime
Read aloud together. Take turns by page or paragraph so your child practices listening and reading.

Tips for Building Confidence
Keep it low-pressure
Reading should feel enjoyable. If frustration rises, take a break or switch to an easier book.
Let them choose
Interest drives motivation. Comics, graphic novels, magazines, and audiobooks all count as reading.
Model reading
When children see adults reading for pleasure, they are more likely to view reading as valuable.
Praise effort, not perfection
Celebrate trying hard words, rereading for understanding, and sticking with a challenging page.
Activities by Reading Skill
Each page has four short routines, coaching tips, and a free printable worksheet your child can write on.
